The Yard Jockey is responsible for operating a forklift to move trailers in and out of the yard, as well as moving empty trailers to different locations within the yard. This position requires excellent communication and coordination skills, as the Yard Jockey must coordinate with other drivers and warehouse personnel to ensure smooth trailer movement.

Objectives

  • To ensure the smooth and efficient running of the yard by organising and coordinating all activities in consultation with the Yard Manager.
  • To liaise with customers, transport companies and other members of staff to ensure that all deliveries are made on time and in accordance with customer requirements.
  • To maintain accurate records of all movements within the yard, including incoming and outgoing vehicles, stock levels and location of assets within the yard.
  • To carry out regular checks of the yard perimeter and equipment to identify any potential health and safety hazards or maintenance issues.
  • To undertake basic maintenance tasks as required, such as topping up fuel levels in vehicles or checking tyre pressures.
  • To provide assistance to colleagues as required, such as helping to load or unload vehicles, or directing traffic around the yard.
