A steel fixer is responsible for the installation of steel reinforcement in concrete construction projects. They must have a good understanding of how to read and interpret blueprints, as well as the ability to safely and effectively use power tools and other equipment. Steel fixers must be able to work independently and as part of a team, and must be able to lift heavy objects and perform physically demanding tasks.

Steel Fixer Job Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret blueprints or other specifications to determine the type and dimensions of steel required
  • Measure, cut, bend, thread, weld, bolt or otherwise assemble and join together various types of metals and alloys
  • Operate manual or semiautomatic welding equipment to fuse metal segments
  • Inspect completed work for conformance to blueprint specifications and quality standards

Objectives

  • To place and secure steel reinforcement bars or mesh in concrete before it sets, using hand and power tools
  • To tie rebar with wire by hand or machine
  • To install post-tensioning cables in forms to reinforce concrete
  • To erect scaffolding and shore up forms for poured concrete walls, columns, beams and ceilings

  • A minimum of 2 years experience as a steel fixer
  • NVQ Level 2 or 3 in Construction Operations Steel Fixing
  • CSCS Card
