The Senior Estimator is responsible for providing cost estimates for projects and performing quantity takeoffs. They develop scopes of work and budgets, and prepare bids for new projects. They review plans and specifications to determine project requirements. The Senior Estimator also meets with clients to discuss project needs and objectives.

Senior Estimator Job Responsibilities

  • Manage and oversee the estimating department to ensure accuracy and timeliness of estimates.
  • Review construction documents and drawings to fully understand scope of work and project requirements.
  • Research, collect, and analyze data to develop realistic cost estimates for projects.
  • Utilize computer software programs to generate cost estimates for projects.
  • Work with project managers and other stakeholders to identify potential issues or risks that could impact project costs.
  • Prepare detailed cost reports outlining all estimated costs for a project.
  • Present cost estimate reports to clients or other decisionmakers as needed

  • To develop an accurate and comprehensive estimate for all projects, big or small.
  • To work with the project manager to ensure that all necessary information is gathered in order to provide an accurate estimate.
  • To liaise with subcontractors and suppliers to get accurate pricing information for the project.
  • To use cost estimating software to generate an estimate based on historical data and current market prices.
  • To review the scope of work for each project and identify any potential risks which could impact the final cost of the project.
  • To provide regular updates to the project manager on the progress of the estimate and make recommendations for changes if required

Senior Estimator Job Skills & Qualifications Needed

  • Some senior estimators have a bachelor’s degree in construction management, engineering, or a related field. Many have completed an apprenticeship or have several years of experience working as an estimator. Senior estimators should be proficient in computer software programs used for estimating, such as Microsoft Excel and Project. They should also be able to read and interpret blueprints and construction documents. Excellent communication, math, and problemsolving skills are essential for this role.
