A steamfitter is a tradesperson who installs, maintains and repairs piping systems that carry liquids and gases. Steamfitters work in a variety of industries, including power generation, chemical processing, oil and gas production, food and beverage manufacturing and pharmaceuticals. Steamfitters install pipes that carry water, steam, air or other liquids or gases. They use a variety of tools to cut, thread and bend pipe to the required shape and size. Steamfitters also install valves, fittings and other components on piping systems. They may also weld pipes together using welding equipment. Maintenance tasks performed by steamfitters include inspecting pipes for leaks or corrosion, testing valves for proper operation and replacing worn or damaged parts. Repair work may involve soldering or welding broken pipes together or installing new pipes to replace those that are damaged beyond repair.
Steamfitter Job Responsibilities
- Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and specifications to determine layout of piping systems, materials required, and installation procedures
- Measure, cut, thread, bend, assemble and install pipes made of various metals and nonmetals
- Install supports for pipes, valves, fixtures and other equipment
- Inspect work to ensure that it meets specifications and codes
- Perform tests on installed systems to check for leaks
