The Server's role is to provide food and drink services to customers in a restaurant, bar, or other similar establishment. They are responsible for taking orders from customers, preparing and serving food and drinks, collecting payments, and cleaning up after themselves and their guests.

Server Job Responsibilities

  • Greeting customers as they arrive and seating them in the dining room
  • Taking customers’ orders and relaying them to the kitchen staff
  • Serving food and drinks to customers
  • Clearing away dishes and utensils after customers have finished their meals
  • Answering customers’ questions about menu items
  • Accepting payments from customers

Objectives

  • To provide an efficient and friendly service to customers in a restaurant setting.
  • To take food and drink orders accurately and relay them to the kitchen staff in a timely manner.
  • To upsell menu items and drinks whenever possible to increase sales for the restaurant.
  • To ensure that all tables are properly set up with cutlery, crockery, glassware and napkins prior to guests being seated.
  • To clear away used dishes and cutlery from tables after guests have finished their meals, and reset the table for the next seating.
  • To maintain a clean and tidy dining room area at all times, including sweeping/vacuuming floors, wiping down tables, etc.
  • To assist with food preparation when needed or requested by the chef de partie/sous chef .
  • To attend regular team meetings held by management in order to discuss any issues or concerns, as well as receive updates on new menu items, promotions, etc

Server Job Skills & Qualifications Needed

  • The skills and qualifications needed for the role of server vary depending on the type of establishment in which they are working. However, most servers will need to have basic math skills, as well as the ability to read and follow directions. Additionally, servers should be able to effectively communicate with customers and coworkers. Some specific qualifications that may be required or preferred by employers include:
