A patient care technician is a type of occupational health nurse. Patient care technicians care for patients who are unable to care for themselves. They visit patients at home, in hospitals, and in long-term care facilities. Patient care technicians work under the supervision of a registered nurse or a licensed practical nurse. They perform duties such as changing dressings, monitoring vital signs, and dishing out medications. Patient care technicians are also responsible for proper infection control practices.

Patient Care Technician Responsibilities

  • Provide patient care under direct supervision in accordance with established company policies and procedures
  • Assist patients, visitors, and employees with activities of daily living
  • Maintain accurate patient records
  • Assist with patient height and weight measurements
  • Provide patients with assistance with bathing, grooming, and incontinence care
  • Perform basic nursing care for patients
  • Leverage resident’s strengths and abilities to promote independence, maximize productivity, and facilitate successful transitions
  • Assist residents with meal preparation and cleanup
  • Perform housekeeping and laundry duties
  • Deliver medications as prescribed
  • Develop and implement activity plans
  • Provide quality customer service to patients, residents, and family members
  • Perform other related duties as assigned

Objectives

  • Treat patients under physician’s direction and assist the physician with medical care
  • Perform various laboratory tests such as blood counts, urinalysis, cultures and glucose tests
  • Perform various diagnostic procedures such as electrocardiogram (EKG), electroencephalogram (EEG), and holter monitors
  • Perform procedures such as central venous catheterization
  • Investigate patient complaints, symptoms, and abnormal physical findings, and apply appropriate diagnostic procedures
  • Handle and record patient health information
  • Create and update records in patient charts
  • Assist physicians during examinations and treatments
  • Advise other staff members regarding various procedures
  • Make referrals and appointments

Patient Care Technician Needed

  • Proven experience in patient care or clinical experience
  • Strong customer service skills
  • Ability to work independently and within a team
  • Possess a working knowledge of computers and keyboarding
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality
  • Possess valid state driver's license and auto insurance
