The role of a lawyer is to provide legal advice and representation to clients in court. They may also be involved in negotiating settlements outside of court. Lawyers must be able to research and analyze complex legal problems, write clear and concise briefs, and deliver effective oral arguments.

Lawyer Job Responsibilities

  • Analyze and interpret laws, rulings, and regulations with potential legal implications to advise clients on a course of action
  • Prepare and deliver oral and written arguments in hearings and trials before judges, juries, or arbitrators
  • Gather evidence to formulate defense or to initiate legal actions, by interviewing witnesses and conducting discovery procedures
  • Represent clients in court or before government agencies
  • Select jurors, argue motions, meet with judges, and question witnesses during trial
  • Conduct research on relevant laws, regulations, judicial decisions, legal articles, codes, and similar materials

Objectives

  • To provide legal representation and advice to clients in order to help them resolve their legal problems.
  • To research and investigate the facts of a legal case in order to prepare for trial.
  • To present evidence and argument in court in order to persuade a judge or jury to rule in favor of a client.
  • To draft, file, and serve legal documents such as complaints, motions, and subpoenas.

Lawyer Job Skills & Qualifications Needed

  • A Lawyer must have excellent communication, negotiation and problemsolving skills. They must also be able to work well under pressure and meet deadlines. A law degree is required in order to become a lawyer, as well as being admitted to the bar in the jurisdiction in which they wish to practise.
