The Flight Nurse is responsible for providing high quality patient care during transport by helicopter or airplane. They work with a team of medical personnel to stabilize and monitor patients en route to the hospital. The Flight Nurse must be able to think quickly and make decisions in emergency situations. They must have excellent communication skills and be able to work well under pressure.

Flight Nurse Job Responsibilities

  • Administering emergency care to sick or injured patients during air transport
  • Coordinating with the pilot and other crew members to ensure smooth operation of the flight
  • Monitoring and documenting vital signs and other patient information during transport
  • Providing emotional support to patients and their families

Objectives

  • To provide direct patient care and medical treatment during air transport of critically ill or injured patients.
  • To coordinate all aspects of patient care during flight, including assessment, stabilization, and ongoing monitoring of vital signs and other parameters.
  • To administer medications and perform other therapeutic interventions as necessary to maintain patient stability during transport.
  • To communicate with the receiving facility regarding the patient's condition and anticipated needs upon arrival.
  • To maintain a clean and wellstocked work area throughout the shift.
  • To document all aspects of patient care in accordance with hospital policies and procedures

Flight Nurse Job Skills & Qualifications Needed

  • In order to be a flight nurse, one must have a nursing degree and be licensed as a registered nurse. Additionally, they must have experience in critical care nursing and hold a certification in advanced cardiac life support.
