The Child Protective Investigator (CPI) is responsible for investigating allegations of child abuse and neglect. The CPI will interview the child, the parents/caregivers, and other witnesses to gather information about the alleged abuse or neglect. The CPI will also review medical records and any other relevant documentation. Based on the information gathered, the CPI will determine if there is enough evidence to substantiate the allegation and make a recommendation to Children’s Protective Services (CPS).

Child Protective Investigator Job Responsibilities

  • Conduct investigations of child abuse and neglect cases
  • Interview children, parents, and other family members
  • Gather information from law enforcement, social service agencies, medical professionals, and others involved in the case
  • Prepare reports detailing the findings of the investigation
  • Make recommendations to child protective services on whether or not to remove a child from their home

  • Monitor compliance with court orders and safety plans
  • Provide testimony in court as needed

  • A Child Protective Investigator (CPI) must have excellent communication and interpersonal skills in order to interact with children, families, and other professionals. They must be able to assess situations quickly and make sound decisions. A CPI should also have strong writing skills in order to document cases clearly and concisely.
