The Biochemist will be responsible for conducting chemical analyses of biological samples in order to study the structure and function of cellular components. The Biochemist will also develop new methods for these analyses, as well as optimize existing methods. In addition, the Biochemist will interpret data and present results in both written and oral reports.

Biochemist Job Responsibilities

  • Developing new methods for the analysis and synthesis of chemicals
  • Investigating the structure and function of biological molecules
  • Identifying the causes of chemical imbalances in living systems
  • Designing experiments to test hypotheses about the role of specific chemicals in physiological processes
  • Interpreting data from experiments and formulating conclusions
  • Communicating findings to colleagues, students, and the general public

Objectives

  • To develop and conduct experiments to study the chemical composition or structure of living cells, tissues, and organs.
  • To analyze data from experiments to determine the effect of changes in temperature, pH, and other conditions on biochemical reactions.
  • To develop new methods for detecting and measuring biochemical substances.
  • To design experiments to test the effects of drugs or other chemicals on biochemical processes.

Biochemist Job Skills & Qualifications Needed

  • A biochemist typically needs a bachelor's degree in biochemistry, chemistry, or a related field. Many research positions also require a master's degree or doctorate. Biochemists need strong math and science skills. They must be able to use complex equipment and software to analyze data and solve problems. Communication, teamwork, and problemsolving skills are also important.
