The Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (ACNP) is a registered nurse with advanced graduate training who provides primary and/or specialty health care services to patients with acute and chronic health problems. ACNPs work in collaboration with physicians and other health care professionals to provide comprehensive care for their patients. They are trained in the diagnosis and management of a wide range of acute and chronic medical conditions, including but not limited to: respiratory disorders, cardiovascular disorders, gastrointestinal disorders, genitourinary disorders, endocrine disorders, immunologic disorders, hematologic disorders, infectious diseases, neoplastic diseases, musculoskeletal disorders. ACNPs also have expertise in the management of patients who are critically ill or at risk for developing critical illness.

Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Job Responsibilities

  • Examine patients and take their medical histories
  • Order, perform, and interpret diagnostic tests
  • Prescribe medications and treatments
  • Counsel patients on diet, exercise, and health maintenance
  • Collaborate with physicians and other healthcare professionals to plan care for patients

Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Job Skills & Qualifications Needed

  • A minimum of a master's degree in nursing
  • At least two years of experience as a registered nurse
  • A valid RN license
  • Board certification as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner
