A stagehand is responsible for the set up and strike of all production elements within a live theatre show. This includes but is not limited to: sets, props, sound equipment, lights, and costumes. A stagehand must be able to lift heavy objects and have basic carpentry skills. They must also be able to follow detailed instructions and work well under pressure.

Stagehand Job Responsibilities

  • Responsible for the set up and tear down of all stage equipment as directed by the production manager or head stagehand.
  • Assist in the construction of temporary structures, such as scaffolding, as needed.
  • Operate spotlights and other lighting equipment during performances.
  • Ensure that all onstage props are in their proper place before each performance and that they are removed from the stage when no longer needed.
  • Help to maintain cleanliness backstage and onstage during performances.
  • Perform basic repairs on stage equipment as necessary.

  • To maintain the cleanliness and organization of the stage area.
  • To assist performers with onstage set changes and props as needed.
  • To strike (take down) the stage following performances.
  • To transport equipment and supplies to and from performance venues as needed.

Stagehand Job Skills & Qualifications Needed

  • Most stagehands have a high school diploma or equivalent. Some jobs may require postsecondary education, and some employers prefer applicants who have completed a formal apprenticeship or training program. Many stagehands learn their skills through onthe-job training.
