A patternmaker is a professional who creates patterns for use in the manufacture of clothing, upholstery, and other textile products. The patternmaker's job is to take the measurements of a garment or object and create a paper or digital template that can be used to produce that item on a larger scale. Patternmaker Job Responsibilities

  • Draft and develop patterns for garments, using computeraided design (CAD) software or by hand.
  • Make adjustments to patterns based on feedback from customers, designers, or manufacturers.
  • Cut fabric pieces out of larger bolts of fabric according to the pattern shapes.
  • Assemble the fabric pieces together to create a sample garment, which is then used to test the fit and sizing of the pattern.
  • Keep records of all pattern changes and updates, as well as measurements for each size in the pattern range.

They must have strong math skills and be able to read and understand blueprints. Patternmakers must also be able to use various hand tools and machinery.
