A Journeyman Lineman is responsible for installing, repairing and maintaining overhead and underground power lines. They must be able to work with a variety of tools and equipment, as well as climb poles and towers. Journeyman Linemen must have excellent problem-solving skills and be able to work independently.

  • Installing and repairing overhead and underground power lines
  • Maintaining and repairing electrical equipment
  • Inspecting power lines and equipment for damage
  • Responding to power outages
  • Clearing trees and debris from power lines

Objectives

  • Install and maintain overhead and underground power lines
  • Inspect power lines and equipment for damage or defects
  • Repair or replace damaged power lines and equipment
  • Operate line trucks, excavators, cranes, and other heavy equipment
  • Climb poles and towers to access high areas
  • Work with energized electrical circuits up to 138 kV
  • Follow safety procedures to avoid injuries or accidents

Journeyman Lineman Job Skills & Qualifications Needed

  • A journeyman lineman is a worker who has completed an apprenticeship program and has received a license from the state in which they work. Most journeyman linemen have at least four years of experience working with power lines.
