A journeyman electrician is a trained and experienced professional who installs, repairs and maintains electrical systems. They work with a variety of tools and equipment to complete their tasks, and must be able to read and interpret blueprints and other technical diagrams. Journeyman electricians are knowledgeable in all aspects of electrical work, including safety procedures. They typically work full-time hours during the week, but may be required to work overtime or on weekends as needed.

Journeyman Electrician Job Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and specifications to determine the layout of industrial equipment installations
  • Install, maintain, repair, and test electrical motors, generators, alternators, transformers, switchgear assemblies, lighting fixtures and control systems
  • Plan layouts of electrical wiring systems and circuitry for new construction projects such as factories, office buildings and homes
  • Assemble conduits containing wiring used in industrial settings such as power plants
  • Perform work in accordance with all applicable codes and regulations
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities and repairs performed

Objectives

  • Read and interpret blueprints, diagrams, electrical code specifications, and job orders to determine work requirements and sequence of installations
  • Install, maintain, repair and test electrical equipment, systems and components
  • Plan layout and installation of electrical wiring, equipment and fixtures based on job specifications
  • Connect wires to circuit breakers, transformers or other components
  • Inspect electrical systems for defects or malfunctions & make necessary repairs or adjustments using hand tools & testing equipment
  • Advise management on whether continued operation of equipment could be hazardous
  • Work safely around energized circuits

Journeyman Electrician Job Skills & Qualifications Needed

  • A journeyman electrician must have completed an apprenticeship or have a minimum of four years of experience working as an electrician. They must also pass a journeyman electrician exam to receive their license.
