Fitter Job Description Template
A fitter is a skilled tradeperson who assembles, installs and repairs pipe systems, machinery and equipment. They interpret blueprints and sketches to determine the best way to cut, join and connect pipes made of various metals and plastics. A fitter takes measurements, cuts pipes to size using power tools and welds or glues them together.
Fitter Job Responsibilities
- Read and interpret engineering drawings and specifications
- Use a variety of tools and equipment to cut, shape and form metal components
- Assemble components using welding, brazing, riveting, screwing and bolting techniques
- Install completed assemblies or subassemblies in plant machinery and vehicles
- Set up and operate plant machinery to test completed products for functionality and performance
Objectives
- Assemble, fit, and install piping, fixtures, and valves according to specifications.
- Inspect work sites to determine the layout of pipefitting systems.
- Cut pipes to required lengths using power saws or cutting torches.
- Thread pipes to required specifications using hand or power threading equipment.
- Bend pipes to required angles using handtools, pipe benders, or angle grinders.
- Install supports for pipe systems such as hangers and brackets.
