A Deckhand is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the vessel’s deck and superstructure. They are also responsible for assisting with the loading and unloading of cargo, mooring and unmooring operations, and other general duties as assigned by the Captain or Mate.

Deckhand Job Responsibilities

  • Maintaining the cleanliness of the deck and superstructure
  • Assisting with mooring and unmooring operations
  • Handling lines and fenders during docking and undocking procedures
  • Assisting with anchoring operations
  • Providing general maintenance and upkeep of deck equipment
  • Helping to launch and recover tenders and other small craft
  • Carrying out security watches as required

  • To work as part of a team to maintain the cleanliness of the deck and public areas of the ship
  • To assist with the smooth running of operations on board by helping with various tasks as requested
  • To provide excellent customer service to guests on board, ensuring their safety and comfort at all times
  • To participate in emergency drills and procedures as required

Deckhand Job Skills & Qualifications Needed

  • The Deckhand is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the vessel. They must be able to work long hours and handle physical labor. No formal education is required, but Deckhands must be certified in CPR and first aid.
