The Costume Designer is responsible for creating the look of the characters in a production through their clothing. They work with the Director and other members of the creative team to determine the style of the show and create a budget for the costumes. The Costume Designer sources or designs all of the costumes and oversees their construction. They also oversee the fitting of costumes on actors and actresses and make any necessary alterations. During performance, they are responsible for maintaining the costumes and keeping them looking clean and presentable.

Costume Designer Job Responsibilities

  • Research and select appropriate fabrics, trims, and fasteners for each costume design.
  • Draft patterns and create prototypes of each costume design.
  • Fit and alter costumes on actors or mannequins to ensure a comfortable and flattering fit.
  • Sew or supervise the construction of all costumes according to the approved designs.
