A carpenter is responsible for constructing, installing, and repairing structures made of wood and other materials. They use a variety of tools to cut, shape, and assemble wood products. They must be skilled in using a variety of hand and power tools. Carpenters must also have physical strength, stamina, and dexterity to perform their duties.
Carpenter Job Responsibilities
- Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and sketches to determine specifications and calculate requirements
- Prepare layouts in conformance to building codes, using measuring tools
- Mark cutting lines on materials, using a ruler, pencil, chalk, and marking gauge
- Shape or cut materials to specified measurements, using hand tools, power saws, shapers, routers, or planers
- Assemble and fasten materials together with nails, screws, staples or glue
- Construct forms for pouring concrete or laying asphalt
- Build scaffolding and ladders for temporary use at construction sites
- Inspect ceiling joists , wall studs , floor framing and roofing structures to ensure that they are level and plumb
- Fill joints with putty or other fillers.
