A carpenter is responsible for constructing, installing, and repairing structures made of wood and other materials. They use a variety of tools to cut, shape, and assemble wood products. Carpenters typically work in the construction industry, but may also find employment in the manufacturing or forestry industries. Carpenters must be able to read blueprints and follow instructions. They must be skilled in using a variety of hand and power tools. Carpenters must also have physical strength, stamina, and dexterity to perform their duties.

Carpenter Job Responsibilities

  • Read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and sketches to determine specifications and calculate requirements
  • Prepare layouts in conformance to building codes, using measuring tools
  • Mark cutting lines on materials, using a ruler, pencil, chalk, and marking gauge
  • Shape or cut materials to specified measurements, using hand tools, power saws, shapers, routers, or planers
  • Assemble and fasten materials together with nails, screws, staples or glue
  • Construct forms for pouring concrete or laying asphalt
  • Build scaffolding and ladders for temporary use at construction sites
  • Inspect ceiling joists , wall studs , floor framing and roofing structures to ensure that they are level and plumb
  • Fill joints with putty or other fillers.
