A Doula is a trained professional who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to a mother before, during and shortly after childbirth to help her achieve the healthiest, most satisfying experience possible.

Doula Job Responsibilities

  • Providing physical, emotional, and informational support to a person who is pregnant or experiencing pregnancy loss
  • Acting as a liaison between the pregnant person and their medical care provider
  • Helping the pregnant person to make informed decisions about their pregnancy and birth
  • Supporting the family after the birth of the baby

Objectives

  • To provide physical, emotional and informational support to a person before, during and after childbirth.
  • To be a advocate for the birthing person and their family.
  • To help the birthing person achieve the birth they desire by providing evidencebased information and support.
  • To provide continuous care throughout labor, delivery and the postpartum period.
  • To facilitate communication between the birthing person, their partner/family and medical staff to ensure that everyone is on the same page and working together towards a positive birth outcome.

Doula Job Skills & Qualifications Needed

  • There are no specific skills or qualifications needed to become a doula. However, many doulas have experience in the field of childbirth and/or women's health. Additionally, most doulas have received training from a professional organization, such as DONA International or CAPPA.
