Tooling Engineer Job Description Template

A tooling engineer is responsible for the design and development of tools used in the manufacturing process. This includes dies, molds, jigs, fixtures, and other special purpose equipment. Tooling Engineer Job Responsibilities

  • Designs and develops new tooling, fixtures, and gages to support production activities.
  • Works with engineering and manufacturing teams to identify tooling requirements for new or revised products.
  • Performs feasibility studies on proposed tooling concepts to determine manufacturability, cost, and cycle time impact on production processes.
  • Utilizes computeraided design (CAD) systems to develop detailed drawings of tooling concepts for review by engineering and manufacturing personnel.
  • Selects materials, components, and equipment for use in tooling designs based on factors such as strength, heat resistance, conductivity, and dimensional stability.
  • Coordinates the construction of prototype tooling with outside vendors or inhouse machinists according to specifications approved by engineering personnel.
  • Inspects completed prototype tooling prior to delivery to ensure compliance with design specifications and quality standards; makes modifications as necessary.

Tooling Engineer Job Skills & Qualifications Needed

  • A tooling engineer should have a bachelor's degree in engineering, preferably in mechanical engineering. They should also have experience working with tools and machines, as well as experience in manufacturing processes.
